Communication Barriers for Foreign Students
English is widely recognized as an important international language in the integrated global economy. Today, many ESL (English as a Second Language) students around the world attend English classes either in their own country or abroad.
A substantial number of international students arrive in English-speaking environments such as Vancouver with limited English speaking skills. This may be due to various factors such as previous instruction by teachers with limited English fluency, or minimal opportunities for practice of conversational skills with native English speakers at home.
Undoubtedly, speaking ability is a crucial aspect of language competence. Mastery of grammar and writing skills alone do not fully reflect practical speaking ability in real-life situations. Therefore, employers and university admissions personnel rely on tests of English, such as the TOEFL or IELTS, to evaluate speaking skills along with listening, reading and writing skills. They may also interview students to determine whether they have the communication skills to function well in an academic or professional environment.
